Academy of Health Sciences

Vision

The Burton High School Academy of Health Sciences provides an interdisciplinary academic program to invigorate students in their pursuit to successfully complete the coursework required for college/university matriculation. Our inspired student leaders will provide a vital role to the health care industry.

schlauraff

Mr. Schlauraff is from Lowell, MA. He attended Rivier in Nashua, New Hampshire. He possesses a bachelor’s degree of science in Biology along with a minor in Spanish. He also possesses a Master of Education degree in Cross Cultural Teaching.He is currently teaching Biology and AoHS 10th graders.

dozier

Ms. Sara Dozier comes to Burton High from the School of Science and Technology at San Diego High where she taught a range of science subjects for 5 years, including Biotechnology, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, Medical Biology and Medical Chemistry to all levels of students. As a teacher, she enjoys working with students to engage the community and build tomorrow's leaders. Prior to teaching, she worked in biotechnology for 9 years researching new medicines and models of human disease. She earned a bachelor's in molecular biology from UC Santa Cruz and a master's degree in biology from UC San Diego. When she isn't teaching, she enjoys travel, hiking and camping.

Ms. Marisa Serra is currently the proud teacher of the senior AOHS class here at Burton High School, which focuses on Biotechnology and Forensics. Prior to embarking on her teaching career, Ms. Serra worked as a research assistant with various government contractors. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Forensics, along with a minor in Biological Sciences, from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While working on her undergraduate degree, she spent much of her free time tutoring children at The Shade Tree, a shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence. In addition to her volunteer work at the shelter, Ms. Serra spent many hours volunteering as a tutor in children's hospitals around Las Vegas and the Bay Area. When Ms. Serra has free time, she enjoys traveling, the outdoors, cooking, dancing and being with friends and family.

Pearson

Mr. Pearson is also one of the AoHS teachers. He also teaches Health Ed. and Earth Science to 9th grade.

Health Science Classes

10 Grade Academy of Health Sciences

Students will be introduced to the academic foundations for health science learning about medical terminology, the human body and disease, current health care issues, community interaction, and scientific research.

11th Grade Academy of Health Sciences

Students will explore a broad range of health science careers focusing on the career pathways and employability skills while identifying internship position opportunities for the summer of their Junior year.
